Hi Bob, Kit building and scratch building are two very different animals. Scratch building with a whole lot of modifications that no one has ever done before takes up a whole bunch of time. One mod. changes this, and changes that, etc. on down the line. Each mod. requires design work and testing, even destruction testing. All the airframe components of our build have been completed. Right now we are involved with testing aileron controls using Spectra line to save weight, building a test rig on a vehicle to test our r/c model servo actuated spoilers, and fabricating our molds for our re-designed John Roncz inspired carbon fiber wing tips/winglets. When we are done, we will have an electric twin motor powered self-launched and completely modernized ULF-1. Our build team works together 3 hours every week, and I try to put in at least 2 hours every day. Power system calculations have been done, and wing spars and inboard ribs have been beefed up each to handle the brushless motors. Now we have to source folding propellors, motors, speed controllers, throttles, etc. We already have the battery packs, the most expensive part of the power system. So, it all takes time and money, and we are doing the best we can. We will have a one-of-a-kind microlift sailplane when we are done, hopefully in 2 years, when I turn 65!
