The hole saw idea can be improved by turning (or filing with the drill rod chucked in hand drill) a narrow taper point about 1/16" long on a piece of drill rod of equal diameter to the pilot drill and substitute for the pilot drill so that the point protrudes just past the plane of the cutting teeth. Makes a tiny hole and eliminates the additional step of finding the center of the discs after cutting them out.
