I suppose sanding a connection flat so the gusset make good flat contact
first is easier with an electric sander .
   Let the rudder or aileron diagonals extend long , and the cut all with
one pass of the saw to get perfect length on all at the same time .
   I used a caliper type micrometer that measures inside or outside .
   We have been using a hand plane 8 inches wide for scraping , shaving (
or whatever it's called ) the hand made plywood of 3 layers alternately
grain direction
