Hi, Do a check on the Max empty weight to be legal, it was 60 Kg, there was talk of it being upped to 70 Kg I think in April this year? There is no official need for the build to be overseen as it has nothing to comply with except the weight, a friendly LAA inspector might well have a look and offer a bit of advise, it does not have to have a "G" registration and a pilots license is not required , Though some training in 3 axis would probably keep you in one piece. If you fly it, I'm not certain that you will require insurance as it really does not exist but when being flown you must comply with all Air Navigation Orders (A.N.O.) Member 62, I have discussed this project with Mark Dale who is the technical officer for the British Hang gliding and Paragliding Association. I have it in writing that the BHPA would accept this aircraft under its umbrella. This means that it would be covered by BHPA insurance which is included in the annual membership which is about £80. Mark directed me to legislation which stated that the ULF1 must weigh less than 80Kg and obviously be glider. Similar gliders that would be covered are the American BUG and Grasshopper although I am not aware of any of these flying in the UK at the moment. He is happy for me to fly it on my standard hang gliding qualification but would want to be satisfied that I had recent and adequate three axis (stick control) gliding experience especially before test flying it or find a suitably qualified pilot to do this for me. My experience with the LAA is that as a glider it is totally outside their remit and so officially they can not help with the build. The BGA are not interested because it is too light. The BHPA have no facility to over see or help with building. My personal intention is to chat up one of those nice LAA chaps and get some unofficial advice that way. Dudley Patterson runs courses, one of which I attended in February and gained a helpful grounding in construction and received a some interest from other students. Good luck with your project. Hello all, I have a few questions concerning building and flying the ULF-1 in the UK. I have seen lists of aircraft on the LAA site (amongst others), but the ULF-1 is not included. Does this mean that there would be a legal issue about building and flying this glider in the UK ? If not, has nybody already done this ? I presume I would need to get in touch with an inspector for the build process. Would this be through the LAA or another body ? Thank you for your help.
